Sutures in Natural Lifes Help Daming Energy

Sutural structures can be found in many biological materials, such as skulls, turtle shell, portulaca oleracea, etc. These sutural tessellations acting as the interfaces between stiff and strong reinforcements endorse the biological materials with superior quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties. In our paper “Achieving outstanding damping performance through bio-inspired sutural tessellations.” published recently in JMPS, we develop a theoretical model to analyze the dynamic performance of composites with sutural tessellations. The model provides a powerful tool to design the damping performance of composites, with their excellent quasi-static mechanical properties preserved. Moreover, our model highlights that the morphologies of sutural structures in different kinds of animals and plants have converged to the ones that optimizing their damping capability after millions of years of evolution.
